What Type of Finishes Do Our Wood Floors Have?

We have several options for the finish on our wood floors. Each floor finishing is its own one of a kind and will vary slightly and in some cases quite a bit from floor to floor. The Differences in the finishes allow us to match a variety of styles at an affordable price point. When it comes to wood flooring, the following kinds of wood finishes are the most common we use:

Water-Based Polyurethane

Water-based polyurethane coats the floor and dries quickly. It contains zero voc’s (volatile organic compounds), which means it is not only safe to breathe, but it’s also environmentally friendly. Polyurethane create a coating that offers excellent gloss, deep colour, high durability and a beautiful finish.

Oil Sealer

The oil finish is a transparent, penetrating finish containing natural oils that create a hard, glossy surface. Colours are created by flattening the naturally occurring oils and resins within the wood, producing a consistent tone and sheen throughout the floor. Since the finish seals the wood, it is more scratch resistant than lacquer sealers that actually colour the wood. It brings out the natural beauty of pine floors with a deep and lasting luster that gives floors an antique look.

Hard-Wax Oil

Hard-wax oil is one of the most natural finishes on wood floors. Hard-wax oil is created by blending linseed or walnut oil into a hard-wax solution, then adding the solution to oiled wood with its grain in one direction while it’s rotating between two rollers. The blend penetrates the wood, softening its fibers just enough for them to swell and bond.

Acid Cured

Acid Curing is a method of finishing your wood floors in acid. This roughens the surface and provides a pleasing matte finish with some shine to it. The acid also brings out the natural grain of the wood and therefore, makes the floor appear more solid. This technique is ideal for rooms that see daily traffic and especially where there is no moisture protection (such as kitchens or laundry rooms).

Aluminum Oxide

Aluminum Oxide is a high-holding, self-lubricating coating. The density and finish properties of Aluminum Oxide provide the best value for older wear patterns or surfaces that need conditioning. Aluminum Oxide finishes are easy to apply and can also be chemically sharpened to reduce slip issues if needed.
