Species of Rustic Wood Flooring

Maple, Hickory, and walnut are popularly known species used in rustic wood flooring, but others are also available. Hickory and walnut are more resilient, resistant to moisture, splinters, scratches and stains, which is why they are usually used for rustic floors.

However, some species can be even harder to work with. For example, heart pine and oak hardwood are more durable than softwoods such as maple and hickory. It’s best to check the hardiness and durability of the wood you’re considering for a rustic floor before buying it.

When you’re looking at species in rustic flooring, it’s important to consider how durable the species is and how much maintenance it will need. Hickory and maple are durable, but walnut is not.

Walnut tends to be a good option for smaller, smaller homes or projects with a short life. It’s a good choice for flooring in bathrooms, dining rooms, living rooms, foyers and entryways because of its relatively soft and easily maintained grain.

wood flooring, such as that made with heart pine or oak hardwood, can be installed with a few coats of finish. Others need to be sanded down and stained or sealed after installation.

The common types of rustic flooring species are described below:

Hickory Rustic Wood Flooring

Hickory (Carya glabra) is a hard, strong and long-lived wood species that has a tight grain and an earthy flavour. It is resistant to heat, humidity, and pests. It is susceptible to termites and must be properly pre-treated, sealed, and/or finished in order to avoid problems.

Hickory is a popular wood for flooring, as it is hard, strong and resistant to heat and humidity. It is a popular choice for rustic hardwood floors, because it is resistant to warping, splitting, and cracking.

Walnut Rustic Wood Flooring

Walnut (Juglans spp.) is a very dense and hard species of wood and has a strong grain. It is less resistant to heat and is more prone to splitting. It is also the most expensive of all the hardwood species and requires more maintenance.

Maple Rustic Wood Flooring

Maple (Acer platanoides) is very strong and is often used in flooring as its wood is more resistant to heat than other hardwood species. It is also less expensive than hickory, but has a distinctive grain and is easy to split. Maple is also a popular choice for rustic flooring, as it is hard, strong and resistant to heat and humidity.

Oak Rustic Wood Flooring

Oak (Quercus spp.) has a tight grain, making it particularly suitable for flooring. It is versatile, resilient to heat and humidity, and requires less maintenance than other hardwood species. It can also be easily stained or stained and finished in one go, but the wood grain is also less attractive.

Chestnut Rustic Flooring

Chestnut is a very robust timber and is often found in ancient and medieval buildings.

Antique rustic chestnut flooring can be found in a wide range of sizes and shapes and makes a good flooring for the house.

Cedar Rustic Flooring

Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) is the most stable wood of all the hardwood species. It is a popular choice of flooring because it is resilient to heat, humidity, and pests. It is also extremely durable and long-lasting. However, it requires more maintenance than other hardwood species. It is also expensive and must be properly pre-treated, sealed, and/or finished in order to avoid problems.

Rustic Wood Flooring Designs

A lot of rustic flooring designs revolve around the idea of adding a distressed or worn appearance to wood. These wood floors can be used in a variety of home and commercial settings, including restaurants and hotels.  They are beautiful and can be used in any room of the home.

Many rustic floor designs use textures that are similar to wood grain. Some may use the textures of old barns or warehouses. The textures may also include swirls, lines, and even some variations in colour. The flooring may have several textures. Some designers use one main texture, while others use several.

Types of Rustic Wood Flooring

Wood floors may come in a variety of types, depending on what type of wood is used. Some examples of rustic wood flooring types are:

Engineered Rustic Wood Flooring

Engineered floors, also called “pressure-treated”, are made from treated wood and are resistant to termite and insect damage. The finish can be high gloss or matte and can be applied in a single or double-coat finish. Engineered floors also come with a limited warranty.

Engineered flooring is the most widely available type of rustic flooring. It’s popular for interior applications, although it can be used on the exterior too.

Luxury Vinyl Plank

Luxury vinyl planks are made from solid hardwood and are stainable, water-resistant, easy to clean, and UV-resistant. They are available with a variety of stains, colour options, textures, and styles.

Hand Scraped Wood Flooring

Hand-scraped wood floors are the most labour intensive of all types of wood floors. The wood is hand-scraped using a brush, sanding with a hand-sanding machine, or even a hand sander. The wood is distressed for its appearance.

They are beautiful and can be used in any room of the home or hotel, including restaurants, bars, guest suites, and offices.  They are a classic, elegant choice for a variety of settings, and can be used in both residential and commercial applications.

Many rustic wood flooring styles are useful to protect the wood from moisture, water, and spills. This is helpful in both homes and commercial settings.  Some of the rustic designs are perfect for the kitchen, and some are even waterproof.

The look is timeless, and some of the designs look more formal than others. You may want to consider rustic flooring to protect your floor from moisture, and from scratches and nicks.  You may also be interested in some other materials that are waterproof and scratch-resistant.

Some designers also use rustic flooring in bathrooms and in children’s playrooms, to protect the flooring from moisture and scratches.  Some designers use rustic flooring to emphasize the natural beauty of wood or to add natural textures to their floors.
